Our November 2023 issue is full of gratitude. Our featured article explores Northern Regional Hospital’s impressive Rehabilitation Center. We are thankful for their staff and their offerings for our community. In our Lifestyle section, we go over techniques to combat overthinking in Fit Living, appreciate what we have in Just A Thought, think about what it means to be there for someone in Held, Thankfully, and discuss what we truly deserve in This Little Light of Mine. We look at delicious recipes of spoon bread and salted caramel apple cake in our Southern Taste Section. Lastly, we thank our farmers, hear from a thankful veterinarian, and learn gratitude from Traveler the horse in our Home, Farm, and Garden section. All this and more is found in our November 2023 issue.

Overthinking
Rachael Williams Fit Living When asked, I’m more than happy to share advice on nutrition, fitness, sleep, and recovery. Most of the time, everyone already knows the answers. We’ve heard them before. Many suggestions are so simple we don’t think they could be the real answer. There must be more. And it must be complicated.…
Held, Thankfully
Sheri Wren Haymore Author Recently, with Hurricane Idalia crashing Florida’s coast and aiming for the next three states, I realized that each of my two sisters would be right in its path. I sent a “take care of yourselves” text to them both. My sister Pat, in Southport, expressed hope that the storm would wear…
My Ship Never Came In
Eddie Lowe Just A Thought Have you ever heard someone say, “My ship never came in”? Centuries ago, wealthy merchants would invest in ships to bring spices, textiles, or other goods from far away. When I learned the theme for the November issue of Surry Living,…

A Change of Heart and Mind
Derina Pyles Horse Sense “Run, Seabiscuit! Run!” I yelled as I turned Traveler out into the pasture for the first time in a month. He had developed a nasty hoof abscess from the damp spring. Diligently treating it day after day is not the kind of glamorous life most people think comes with horse ownership.…

So Grateful
Carmen LongSimply Delicious “Gratitude turns what we have into enough.” I have a sign with this saying, credited to Aesop, displayed on my windowsill. The words are still as pertinent today as when written, and they remind me daily of my many blessings. During COVID, our Extension and Community Association (ECA) held a virtual spring…
